Monsters that are often considered the best to add to a team are often the ones that are feared and hated by most. ..

  1. Rock/Ground – Jynx
  2. Rock/Ground – Machamp
  3. Rock/Ground – Dragonite
  4. Rock/Ground – Gyarados
  5. Rock/Ground – Alakazam

We’ll be focusing on HeartGold & SoulSilver here, but these picks can apply to Gold/Silver/Crystal as well.

5. Golem

Golem is a Pokémon that’s let down by its dual-typing. Golem is a powerful Pokémon that’s been left behind by its Trainer.

The Pokémon is weak to both Grass and Water moves, rendering it ineffective in battles against these common types. ..

Golem is a versatile Pokémon that can use its high damage physical moves to take down Pokémon. If it’s not fighting against Pokémon with these types, Golem will be at a disadvantage.

Earthquake is a quintessential move for Golem, making it one of the most powerful moves in the game.

For Rock-type STAB, Golem could use Stone Edge, a natural ability learned at level 49.

Unfortunately, the wait for level 49 is long. So maybe teach Golem Rock Throw or Rock Blast in order to speed up the process.

When Golem isn’t up against something it can one-shot, consider laying down some entry hazards with the Stealth Rock TM, found in the Celadon Department Store.

Grass or water-type Pokémon can’t be taken out of the field by using just “Roar” - we need to teach Golem “Roar” as a last resort.

To catch a Geodude on Route 45 or 46, you can either catch it in the wild or evolve it into Graveler at 25. Once you have Graveler, trade it to another game and back again to get your Golem.

4. Tyranitar

Tyranitar is the best Rock-type this side of Gen 8.

Larvitar is not found in the wild until after the final battle with Red.

That’s not really what I was looking for. ..

If you trade Larvitar to yourself from another game, that’s more like it. ..

Pupitar learns Stone Edge at level 54, which will become Tyranitar’s primary STAB move.

Tyranitar Crunch will teach Dark-type Tyranitar a move that it will learn as a Pupitar.

Earthquake will also make an appearance here, to deal with any Steel-types that could pose a threat to Tyranitar.

Tyranitar will receive the Flamethrower TM to cover its Bug and Grass weaknesses. This move can be found in the Goldenrod City Department Store or on Route 28. ..

The other way is to trade for a Tyranitar from another player. ..

The way I recommend, however, is trading a Larvitar to yourself from a completed copy of Diamond or Platinum, where it can be found on Route 206 and 207 respectively.

3. Marowak

Tyranitar is a much more powerful Pokémon than Marowak. ..

This article is about how the city of Chicago has made great strides in accessibility in recent years, thanks to its efforts to make public transportation more accessible.

As a Ground-type, Marowak should have Earthquake in its moveset to deal more damage.

The TM for Earthquake is not learned through leveling. We would have to find it from Victory Road or at the Battle Frontier Market.

TM can also be used to teach Marowak Dig, which is helpful in battle and in the overworld.

The Dig Site is located just north of Goldenrod City in the National Park.

We teach Marowak Stealth Rock to ensure it’ll have a lasting impact in the battle despite its short time spent fighting.

Finally, teach Marowak Flamethrower to give it some vital coverage against its weakness to Grass-type moves.

Both Marowak and its pre-evolution, Cubone, can be found in the Kanto Rock Tunnel or the Johto Safari Zone. ..

2. Aerodactyl

Aerodactyl is one of my personal favorite Pokémon, but it doesn’t make the cut for the top spot because you won’t get ahold of it until later in the game.

Aerodactyl’s typing of Rock/Flying gives it an interesting array of resistances to weaknesses, so its moveset should be tailored around mitigating some of the unique dangers that it will face.

The Flamethrower will take care of its Ice and Steel-type weaknesses, while the Iron Tail will protect it from any Rock-type users. ..

The Iron Tail TM will be given to you as a reward for beating the Olivine City Gym. ..

Aerodactyl’s main offensive move is Rock Slide, which can be learned naturally at an eye-watering level 65. ..

Rock Tomb will continue to serve as a substitute for the entrance to Union Cave.

For Flying-type moves, both Fly and Aerial Ace work great. So feel free to pick whichever fits your priorities best. ..

To catch Aerodactyl, you will need to collect Old Amber and use Rock Smash on the rocks found in the Ruins of Alph. The Aerodactyl will then be revived and can be used in the game.

1. Steelix

Steelix is a great all-rounder that excels in both ground and steel attacks.

Steelix has a lot of type resistances, so we can fill its moveset with 4 offensive moves to take advantage of its weaknesses.

A recent earthquake has returned here as the best Ground-type move, while Stone Edge will act as a nice bit of coverage against Fire-types.

Steelix’s huge bulk gives it the perfect opportunity to lay down some Stealth Rocks, too. So be sure to pick up that TM.

We’ll leverage Steelix’s bottom-tier speed stat to make the most of Gyro Ball, a move that gets more powerful the slower the user is.

To catch an Onix in Union Cave, you’ll need to find it in the cave and then pick it up from the S.S. Aqua after defeating the Elite Four.

To evolve Onix into Steelix, equip it with the Metal Coat. ..
